Using Wendy Johnson's basic toe-up sock method. I fiddle with it a bit for my 4ply socks, but in execution mostly, not stitches, except that for me I like a longer leg and need to increase after the first finger length of leg to accomodate my calves.

-Cast on 24 stitches using a crochet waste
-knit to wendy's method
-wrap 6 stitches each side of the toe, resulting in 12 unwrapped in the middle
-after the toe is finished and all 48 stitches picked up, knit until the work from toe fold measures 20cm.
-work heel
-knit as much leg as you want
-knit whatever rib you want
-increase in every 4th stitch (or so)
-cast off very loosely.
This fits Papa who wears about an 8 1/2 shoe and likes a thick sock.
For myself I would have to reduce the number of stitches. I'm happier with a thinner sock anyway so I haven't worked those proportions.
