as taught to me by doushkasmum
I'm working on finally finishing the poles and other hardware for my new tent. Balls and spikes for flags have been assembled. Ends have been cut off nails. Poles have been sanded. Decisions have been made on what to paint all the bits with. Poles will be oiled, joiners will be black, ball and spike will be gold. I'm waiting for some undercoat and a brush to dry and I'm feeling too mucky to sew, so I'll write this.
back to how to make a tent pole:
take a mucking great piece of construction pine (90x45mm). Cut in half lengthwise. Octagonalise it by cutting all the corners off. All this cutting was done on the scary table saw. Then shave off the remaining corners with a spokeshave. Stages pictured below:
After all this, mz montjoye felt very pleased with herself and very grateful for the lessons and loan of equipment from doushkasmum.
Later, I learnt how to apply chisel and spokeshave again to cut down one end of each half pole to fit the joiner tubes on.
later still, one drills holes in the other end and hammers in mucking great nails.
even later, one gets around to sealing them.
I'm probably prouder of all this workshop output than my sewing recently. Aren't new skills exciting?
