I have this beautiful yarn I've been looking forward to working up. Alpaca/merino/silk/nylon. But one gets a better product if one chooses a stitch that works with the yarn.

.

It looks fine in plain knitting. This was the sole portion of attempt #1. But if I knit the whole thing in stocking stitch, I'd risk dying of boredom given that the other pair underway are also simple stocking stitch. I'm also concerned that the sock would end up too baggy in stocking stitch. Only 30% of the fibre (the merino portion) has any spring in it.
.

This basket stitch was a mistake. It would be a nice design for plainer yarn but doesn't work with these intricate colour shifts.
.

So I decided to try a herringbone stitch, which keeps the smooth knit stitch and adds angled interest.. But I mucked up my first try in multiple ways, enough that I ripped it AGAIN back to the toe . Thankfully I'm pretty pleased with my third attempt at this sock. I'm looking forward to getting far enough to be knitting with yarn that hasn't already been tortured twice.

.

It is a challenge to remember which of the two pattern rows I need to work next. I've just had the minor brainwave that I can cleverly position the fifth needle as an indicator in between knitting sessions. Then the challenge will be proving I can expand the pattern past the ankle. I still love the yarn though.
